Yogaspace: Shanghai Yoga Studio (Hot Yoga, Power Yoga, Hatha Yoga ...

Although there are many styles of yoga, the differences are usually about emphasis, such as focusing on strict alignment of the body, coordination of breath and movement, holding the postures, or the flow from one posture to another. All of the styles share a common lineage. In fact, the founders of three major styles -- Astanga, Iyengar and Viniyoga -- were all students of Krishnamacharya, a famous teacher at the Yoga Institute at the Mysore Palace in India. Two other styles, Integral and Sivananda, were created by disciples of the famous guru Sivananda. No style is better than another; it's simply a matter of personal preference. More important than any style is the student-teacher relationship.

Ashtanga Yoga

For those who want a serious workout, Ashtanga may be the perfect choice. Developed by K. Pattabhi Jois, Ashtanga is physically demanding. Participants move through a series of flows, jumping from one posture to another to build strength, flexibility and stamina. It's not for beginners or anyone who's been taking a leisurely approach to fitness. Not to be confused with Patanjali's much older Classical Ashtanga Yoga.

Beginner Yoga

Hot Yoga Dances in ShanghaiThis class is a great introduction to yoga for the new student, as well as a great re-introduction for the more experienced student looking for a gentle class. In yoga it is important to keep the attitude of a beginner throughout our lives: remaining open minded, non-competetive and non-judgemental of our practice.

Candlelight Yoga

Come relax and unwind in the evening. Typically yoga is practiced in the morning for its energizing qualities. This class, dimly lit with candles, will help unwind the stresses of the day. Walk in feeling tired, walk out feeling refreshed.

Freestyle Yoga Dance

Yoga Flower Grows in ShanghaiYoga can be described as an internal energetic dance, practiced in stillness. Freestyle Yoga Dance liberates these energies into free-form movement giving them expression through the body. This new fusion style taps in to ancient shamanic traditions where dance has always been a part of humanity's expression of consciousness.

Flow Yoga

Shanghai Yoga Studio Flow Yoga connects Hatha Yoga postures together in a series of seemlessly linked poses, naturally following from one to the next. Using the breath as the rhythm, Flow Yoga classes vary in tempo from holding a pose for 30-60 seconds to moving with one breath per movement as in Power Yoga.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga is the physical side of yoga practice. It primarily derives from two limbs of Classical Ashtanga Yoga, asana (posture) and pranayama (breath-control). Most yoga styles practiced today, such as Power Yoga, Yin Yoga, Ashtanga, and Iyengar, have their roots in Hatha Yoga. Contemporary Hatha Yoga practice involves holding each posture for about 30-60 seconds, being still and breathing deeply.

Hot Yoga

Practice Yoga and Pilates in ShanghaiThis is yoga practiced in a room heated up to as much as 40 degrees celsius. As you can imagine the body begins to sweat profusely and as the muscles warm up they relax making it easier to move into the postures. An intense session of sweating like this can help wash water-soluble toxins out of the body and leave the practitioner feeling invigorated and refreshed (after a cool shower that is!) Remember it is important to drink plenty of fresh, clean water before and after any yoga session, and even more important with Hot Yoga.

Pilates

The Pilates Method was created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Similar in many ways to yoga, this style of movement focuses on developing strength and flexibility and in particular honing the complex, supportive musculature of the abdominal region. By developing the muscles that support the spine one is improving overal spinal health, a major determiner of whole-body well-being.

Power YogaAshtanga and Power Yoga Shanghai

Much like Ashtanga, Power Yoga emphasizes smooth, flowing transitions between physically challenging postures. Connected to breath and often using ujjayi breath, a particular form of pranayama, this style can move quickly and be very demanding. Whereas Ashtanga has a set series that is performed each class, Power Yoga is free to mix it up and create unique flows each class.

Stress Buster

A gentle yoga class where the focus is on letting go of any physical, mental, and emotional tension we may be carrying.

VinyasaRelaxing Healing Massage Yoga Studio

FLOW YOGA (English), or VINYASA-STYLE (Sanskrit) or VINYASA-FLOW (Sanskrit/English)
The Vinyasa-style was created by Sri Krishnamacharya, the "father of modern Yoga". Vinyasa Krama means "sequencing with prescribed parameters". Each variation is linked to the next one by a succession of specific transitional movements, synchronised with slow, deliberate, smooth, and coordinated breathing central to Krishnamacharya's method.

Vinyasa does not just mean "breath synchronized movement". It is a beautiful and powerful style that develops all parts of the body with three elements: awareness, strength and flexibility. Those three should be given the same importance. It also offers a (limitless) range of asanas, therefore variety, flexibility, adaptability

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga is cool yoga. We keep the body cool and hold each posture
for at least five minutes to target the joints. By stretching and working the joints gently we strengthen them and help increase the flow of energy (chi or prana) running through them and the whole body. The purpose of Yin Yoga is true to the original purpose of yoga: to help prepare the body to sit comfortably in meditation for long periods of time. And this class you will have ample opportunity to practicing quieting the mind as we sit still in each pose. For more information please visit www.yinyoga.com.

Jivamukti Yoga School - Downtown Center | SocialWorkout.com

a secret agent of peace   810 1 hr spiritual warrior class with Liz. I'm liking these in the am's before work...my muscles are tight so it's a good opener for the day, without overdoing it and moving my body too much before it's ready to do so. She keeps making me hold her shins in wheel and i dislike this. it's uncomfortable for my shoulder, but I haven't had the chance to give her my redonkulous rundown of injury.

fantastico   11am jiva class. I'm staying in chelsea, on the west side and everything I do is on the east side...this means I've suddenly been blowing $ on cabs! made it to M's class with mere seconds to spare.

spiritual warrior   1 hr Spiritual Warrior Yoga class at Jivamukti with Liz at 810 am. She is cute and her personality is punchy. She was not skimpy on the "green goo" (as she called it. it's china gel...sorta like icy hot...feels great and soothing on the muscles as they work!) and also used the lavendar aloe lotion for savasana. might as well be at the spa!

yeah there's no way that's real sweat on her belly.

yoga=100% relaxation and 100% effort simultaneously   4pm yoga class with Dechen Thurman at Jivamuktiiiiii yoga!

radhakrishna.jpg

shyam-a-lama-ding-dong!   I took a hilarious, uplifting uproaring yoga class yesterday with Matthew Lombardo at Jivamukti. He's always funny, but I guess I'd forgotten how great that is!

this might take a while

and my body was like "nah-ahhahh!'   2 days no workout and i needed to move. my belly is looking like i've not worked out yet still eaten the same amount of calories. um, because that's exactly what happened!  my eye is healed! hallelujah! jai jai! balle balle! woohoo!

Late Night Jivamukti with Nan   Deja vu: It's Thursday night, and it had been nearly a week since the last exercise. Travel got in the way, and work. At the company happy hour, I confessed that I was a miserable hypocrite. You can't run a site dedicated to wellness, and not take care of yourself. I was miles from Feralicious. So I finished my Guinness and bicycled to Jivamukti for the 8:30PM installment.

Yoga in the jungle (with tigers!)   Urbansherpa drank 3, THREE!!! margaritas yesterday evening. For me...that's a lot of tequila! twas fun...but omg headache central today. serotonin sucker, too. Next days are usually days of doom and gloom brain! the cure(s)? tea and kvetching with al. and Dechen Thurman's 4pm yoga class at Jivamukti! and a dinner consisting of breakfast.

Sandhi's Birthday Class   Awesome class with live and recorded music.   Transcendental!!!

vYoga - Good Stuff! (Very tough when you're stnew at this)   I tried Jivamukti Yoga at 841 Broadway, 2nd Floor.  The teacher's name was Sandhi, and, it was her birthday today (we did not ask, and she did not tell. . .but she did bring cookies! Spelt flour too.  Maybe she knew some of us are doing a feat :-D)

Jiva Yoga w/ Cassandra   Vinyasa Class @ Jivamukti.

the rebellious yogi strikes (a match) again. and other intense thought.   I'm seated on the edge of my bathtub gazing out the bathroom window, aka the veranda, aka the chamber of death. This is where my coffee and secret cigarette habit has been taking place this last month. Lavazza coffee via french press, with silk creamer and agave nectar coupled with *organic* cigarette. hahah, organic my tushy. The box says "it does NOT mean a safer cigarette." heh.

david and sharon

Fairy OM's!    Had the amazing opportunity to take an open-level Jivamukti class with it's co-founder David Life this eve at 645. Went early...zipped through the streets so I'd get a good spot, even though you had to pre-register. This was bound to be packed! And it was!

Yoga with Sharon and David   Yoga with Sharon and David,  They are back in town for a few days.

Saved on the Sabbath by a Bald Gringo with Tatts Chanting in Sanskrit   If you haven't gotten exercise for a week, and if, in that time, you've mainly sat at a desk with nose pressed against computer screen; and if, also, your butt hurts so much from sitting that you're convinced you have either a.) a hernia, or b.) prostate cancer; and if you describe your energy level as similar to that of a lizard before sunrise; (and if, by the way, you also have a cold); and, further, if the overheated air in your apartment building has chapped your lips and dried up your stuffy sinuses; and if, frankly, you're also going blind from reading the computer screen, and you're losing your hair, most likely from stress (it can cause hair loss); and finally, if both your recent rotator cuff injury and chronic ankle sprain weigh on you emotionally, and if, even more finally, you've been drinking too much, and eating irregularly; THEN, when Saturday morning rolls around, and you sit dimly on your couch reviewing your exercise options, you're really looking for something that will ease you back on to the righteous path of healthy living.

don't know what this little thingy is that is posing as a happy yogi, but i like im

double dip yoga part deux!   double-dipped again with the yoga today!! getting my fill! Today was Jivamukti day i guess. Gita study group at 930am, and did a mini Masala Bhangra demo there!

hathead

zing!   no coffee till after 1pm! Made it through my study group at the yoga studio AND a butt whooping class with Matthew Lombardo, hysterical and uplifting as usual. My friend Sarah made it to the 11am class! It was AWESOME to have a friend with me for my Sunday ritual yoga class!! Usually on my own, and I like that, but it's also cool to do yoga next to someone you know well.

mini crunching + yoga   Went to crunch union sq for a bit of a pre-game (pre-yoga) workout. very short. man, my cardio skills have plummeted!! did almost 10 min on elliptical until someone got off one of the stair mills and I made a lunge for it, of course dropping my ipod and having to climb between a maze of machine handles and parts to get to it. Then did 10 min on my beloved stair mill.

kayavarohan temple (where swami Kripalu spent time) is so close to my dance teachers house!

roach dedication gone awry, and already kind souls being kinder   930 am Sunrise Gita with Joshua Greene and Kirtan singing (angel voice omg!) karnamrita. had to skip matthew lombardo's class cause i'm broke. was going to head to Yoga to the (broke) People but magically Tamar walked by and asked if I was taking class to which i replied i was on a budget to which she replied by handing me a couple of free class passes! yay!

non-violence

Ahimsa   5pm yoga class with Nahdi Devi. People have been telling me to take her class for some time or to connect with this lovely woman and I finally got it together to go to her class at Jivamukti yoga this evening. Boy, that was a beautiful class! we opened with Shiva chants and the monthly focus "Ahimsa" chants. Right from the start I knew it would be a scenic 1.5 hour yoga ride.
